Pantone has chosen the color of the year for 2020 and this year they went with Classic Blue. It really is a timeless color tone, one that can pair well with any season and any color palette. Now let’s be real here, as a florist I tend to balk at the blue category because we are limited in what is naturally occurring in blue tones. Of course, we have hydrangea, delphinium, forget me nots, eryngium (thistle), and nigella but not the wide array that I’m accustomed to with more natural colors like white or pink. And these natural occurring blue flowers tend to lean more toward the lavender spectrum and sometimes purple which can be disappointing for some couples. For a long time the “go-to” true blue flower has been the Bombay dyed dendrobium orchid and trust me, I have used these about a million times to add that “something blue” to a Bride’s bouquet. Fortunately for us, we live in a new and exciting time in the floral industry when growers, breeders and florists are all willing to think outside of the box when it comes to non-traditional colors, color enhancing, and preservation with tinting. These leads us to a plethora of bred, dyed, or preserved flowers that can bring that blue tone to the floral realm. Of course, these additional processes can come with a bit more cost than their natural counterparts but for some couples it may be worth the added expense to have something so unique added to their BIG day!

Here are some new dyed and preserved products available from our floral markets:

If your thing isn’t blue flowers, try pairing those classic blue tones of your Bridesmaids dresses or Groomsmen suits with berry tones. Shades ranging from pale pink to fuchsia or magenta pop against the darker blue accents.

One style I absolutely love with this classic blue tone is adding in gold or mustard tones. I know, I know, how dare I bring together Michigan colors in the Great State of Ohio, trust me, I’m not happy about it either. But, come on, just look at that stunning color palette! It screams luxury and I, personally, would add in rich golden velvet linens to create a sumptuous look.

Who doesn’t love these trendy mauve tones? Ranging from vintage lilac to dusty rose with a pop of aubergine play nicely with dark blue suits and table settings. It just has this effortlessly chic feel to it and allows a variety of different blooms to be utilized in just about any season.

How about pairing subtle vibrant tones with that classic blue? These corals, berries, and lilacs compliment the blue so naturally without being overtly obnoxious. While some people may look at this an think fall wedding, those coral charm peonies are available in spring and summer and I love this idea for a June or July wedding, forgoing the traditional pastels for something so eye-catching.

And of course, we did our very own blue styled shoot this summer with some amazing vendors! We even coined our own term for it – “bluery” – a not-so-subtle twist on the traditional greenery.

Huge shout out to these talented vendors:
